Children's Day at Amity Reformed Church is the highlight of the year and the end celebration of Sunday
School. It is held on the second Sunday in June.
The children spend many hours in preparation for this special day where a special program takes place during the morning worship service. It varies from year to year, but it always includes everyone's participation in everything from singing, scripture reading, skits, greeting, prayers, taking up the offering and handing out bulletins to the benediction. One of our youth even composed and preached his own sermon one year. It is also a time to recognize our devoted Sunday School teachers who have spent many hours of preparation, love and care in teaching their Sunday School classes. Their dedication and commitment to the Sunday School program goes above and beyond the call of duty and the children feel that. We know that too and want to be sure they know they are appreciated. We also take a minute to recognize the class that brought the most friends on Bring A Friend Sunday and the children receive recognition for their attendance and participation in the Sunday School music program. The children are promoted that day during their Sunday School hour into their class for the next fall, which is also mentioned during this service.
Immediately following worship that day, we hold a big family picnic outside. Everyone brings a dish to share
while hotdogs, hamburgers, beverage, and drink are provided. We have a variety of games for the children
which range from pony rides to smashing a pinata. Finding pennies in the hay is another favorite of the little
ones. Animals similar to those purchased for our Heifer Mission Project are there to greet the children.
We have had everything from rabbits, chickens, a heifer, sheep, and pigs. Last year we had a llama, and as you
can see from the picture above, that was a big hit. The day is concluded with a hayride and sing-a-long before
we send a bunch of very tired kids home for afternoon naps.
The most wonderful thing about having a picnic at Amity is that we are like one big growing family. We have fun while keeping Christ centermost in our lives and hearts. |
