Descendants of Andrew Bohonon, Jr.

1. Lieutenant Andrew Bohonon b. Aug 11, 1737, Boscawen, NH, (son of Andrew Bohonon and Tabitha Flanders) occupation: Builder, Joiner, m. (1) Aug 25, 1762, Susannah Webster, b. Jan 31, 1741, East Kingston, NH, (daughter of Ebenezer Webster and Susannah Batchelder) d. Apr 27, 1783, Salisbury, Merrimack, NH, m. (2) 1784, Betsey (McMiles) Garvin, d. ~1815. Andrew died May 24, 1826, Salisbury, Merrimack, NH.

Andrew, long and familiarly known as Ensign Bohonon, came to Salisbury with his father's family about 1750. At the age of seventeen (1755) he was engaged in the French war under Captain John Stark (afterwards, General Stark) and continued with the Rangers until the close of that war. When the Revolutionary War began, he volunteered under Captain Connor of Pembroke, served at Winter Hill and continued there during the siege of Boston. In 1776 he joined the company of Captain Benjamin Emory in Colonel Baldwin's Regiment, served in the Battle of White Plains and continued with the army until the following winter. In 1777 he was Lieutenant under Captain Ebenezer Webster (his father-in-law) and it has been reported that he served in the Battle of Bennington under General Stark. He volunteered again in 1778 and went with General Sullivan to Rhode Island. While there, the volunteers were ordered to take their stand upon the lower pickets, near the enemy's ships. One morning when he was on guard, he saw a British Lieutenant of Marines in a field of corn not far from him. He hailed the bold intruder, brought him to and ordered him to lay down his arms, which the proud Briton found it necessary to do. Andrew marched in with his prisoner of war amidst the loud acclamations of his fellow soldiers. These facts are taken from a lengthy obituary published in the "New Hampshire Patriot" on June 12, 1826 which adds: "Lieutenant Bohonon maintained through life a uniform character of integrity and uprightness." He was said to have been a handsome man and in colonial days was conspicuous by his picturesque personal appearance.

His first wife, Susannah Webster, was the daughter of Ebenezer Webster and Susannah Batchelder. She was the sister of Judge Ebenezer Webster, the father of Daniel Webster, American statesman and patriot.

2. Major Stephen Bohonon b. Oct 10, 1763, Salisbury, NH, m. Mar 8, 1785, Olive Elliott, b. 1765, Boscawen, NH, (daughter of John Elliott, Jr. and Temperance Durrill) d. Jun 10, 1843. Stephen died Jan 26, 1831.

Major Stephen Bohonon was one of the last survivors in Salisbury of the Revolutionary War. He was distinguished among that hardy corps known as the Rangers. Early in the war, when less than sixteen years of age, his uncle, Captain Ebenezer Webster came to his sister's house and said to her at the door that she must give up Stephen too (her husband, Andrew, was already in the service) to go and aid the cause of the country. He dwelt upon the urgent need for more men at once or all might be lost. A mother's fond misgivings caused her to hesitate for a moment, but finally agreed. Stephen was given up to the service on the promise of Captain Webster that his nephew, for a time at least, should not be exposed, but serve as his clerk and waiter. From inside, Stephen had heard the conversation. He came running out and said, "Uncle, I wish to go to the service, but I will not go as a waiter to anybody. I will enter the ranks as a soldier." The Captain replied, "Stephen, you are a brave boy and shall serve in such a manner as you please." It is said that he immediately proceeded in the company under his uncle's command to Bennington and performed his part well in the engagement of British troops under General Baum. He then entered the regular service and served in different positions during the war.

Stephen was at West Point under Captain Webster in a six month's service when the treachery of Arnold was discovered. Captain Webster had the distinguished honor of being selected to guard Washington's headquarters the night following the discovery. Stephen walked before Washington's tent all night and later said that Washington did not lie down once, but was employed in writing through the night.

Major Stephen built the first house on the site of the Congregational church parsonage and in one of the front rooms he kept a small stock of goods. This was probably the first store at the South Road Village if not the first in town.

After leaving the service he resided for many years in Chelsea, VT and was prominent in public affairs having been a magistrate, town clerk in 1791 and member of the State Legislature in 1796.

Major Ananiah Bohonon was another soldier in the war for independence, entering the army March 13, 1781 and rendering efficient service until the disbanding of the forces in 1783. He served first in Captain Webster's company with his brother, Stephen, and their father, Lieutenant Andrew. In figure he was very erect and was personally complimented by Baron Steuben for his fine soldierly bearing when the troops were passing in review.

After the war he settled in Salisbury, but about 1796 moved to Chelsea with his brother, Stephen.
