Granville T. Woods

· Granville T. Woods was born on April 23 1856 in Columbus, Ohio and died in 1910 at the age of 54.

· Granville was very poor when he died. Some suggested he was poor when he died because he spent his money on legal fees to defend his patents.

· Granville was known as the black Edison.

· Granville only attended school to age 10.

· In 1884, Granville and his brother Lyates started the Woods Railway Telegraph Company. The company made electrical telephone and telegraph equipment for the railway industry.

· Granville T. Woods had over 100 patents and is credited with the following inventions to name only a few:

* Thomas Edison Electric Railway

* Automatic Air Brakes

* Telephone Transmitter

* Electromechanical Brake

* Railway Telegraphy

* Induction Telegraph System

* Overhead Conducting System for Electrified Railway

* Tunnel Construction for Electric Railway

* Galvanic Battery.

 

Granville T. Woods invented the steam boiler furnace (like the one pictured above).
