The following poem was written as a tribute to Chris; his Uncle Dean read
it aloud at his funeral. In rereading it now, it seems appropriate that it
be posted on his website since it expresses thoughts and feelings we continue
to feel even now almost four and a half years after his death.
Dick and Jan Newport, Chris’ maternal grandparents
A Grandparents’ Tribute to Christopher
He was a grandson beyond compare; his heart was one of gold;
Delightful qualities and winning ways too numerous to all be told.
Chris was a young man–truly good and very sweet.
He was loved and respected by everyone he’d meet.
Seizing every opportunity that came his way;
Chris lived life to its fullest, each and every day.
Both humor and sensitivity were big parts of him,
And to help someone out, he’d go out on a limb.
He motivated others to do the right thing, too;
With his engaging smile, his whole life shown through;
He brought joy and smiles to everyone; Chris was a friend to all.
Though small and short of stature, his loving nature made him seem SO tall!
Chris wanted to please everyone; it was easy for him to do.
His gentle manner and thoughtfulness always came shining through.
He enjoyed people of every age–from old to very young.
He traveled with his elders–finding them to be great fun!
‘Twas joy to spend such treasured time with the boy and then young man
Who favorably impressed as we journeyed across this land!
San Diego and Grand Canyon were places he wanted to see.
He traveled with us to these sites and more–including Canadian Rockies.
Together we enjoyed the south–in New Orleans and Vicksburg, too;
At Rushmore he was “famous” by answering a question true!
By being kind and helpful, he’s the only tourist that we know
Who endeared himself to all on board while also making dough!
He helped the driver with luggage and was the darling of that bus;
The group rewarded with some tips and made of him great fuss!
Chris liked activities of all kinds and sorts,
But his very, very favorite was certainly sports!
He like running track and loved team volleyball.
And “pick-up” games of basketball were maybe best of all!
He followed the Giants and was a die-hard Red Sox fan;
He knew baseball stats down to every man!
And if his allegiance was ever in doubt,
All you’d have to do was listen to him shout!
He also loved board games and playing cards;
He liked to win and beat his foe; thus, he always played real hard!
We were “Grandma Jan” and “Gramps” to this very precious
boy;
We were so proud of him; he brought us untold joy!
In our lives he’s played such a special part,
And will always remain deep within our hearts.
Chris taught by example of caring and love
Let’s remember his ways as he looks down from above.
We will miss you forever, Chris; what a blessing you’ve been to our entire family!
