It would be an understatement to say that Troy, New York, loves a parade. Troy hosts one of America's largest Flag Day parades (in early June), as well as--what else?--the Uncle Sam parade, which is held on or close to Sam Wilson's birthday, in mid-September.
Speaking of Uncle Sam making appearances in parades & pageants... Uncle Sam Artists
Miss Uncle Sam PageantParades in Troy feature an appearance from the winners of the Miss Uncle Sam beauty pageant. Miss Uncle Sam's throne, partially visible in this picture, is shaped like a giant version of Sam's top hat.
Here we see the Miss Uncle Sam float from the 1997 Flag Day parade. Miss Uncle Sam 1996, Miranda Mazzariello, presides over Pre-Teen Miss Uncle Sam and Little Miss Uncle Sam. (Not shown: Teen Miss Uncle Sam and Young Miss Uncle Sam.)
A Star-Spangled WeddingThe 1992 Uncle Sam Parade featured a special attraction, not found in most parades: A wedding ceremony! Rumor has it the bride wore red, white and blue.
The happy couple celebrated their fifth anniversary by appearing in the 1997 parade, as shown in the picture at the left.
Getting married in a parade might seem a bit strange, but look at it this way: How many couples can say their wedding had over 10,000 guests?
Uncle Sam Chorus
No Troy parade would be complete without a song by the Uncle Sam Chorus. The chorus features Fred Polnisch, who not only sings but also appears in full Uncle Sam costume. For more information about appearances by Uncle Sam, visit Uncle Sam Artists at http://www.UncleSamArtists.com.
Parade Floats
Troy isn't the only place where Uncle Sam shows up in parades. The float at the left -- which is constructed out of balloons -- appeared in the 29th Annual Rancho Bernardo Parade in northern San Diego county.Mark & Lisa Burginger created the float, which won this year's sweepstakes award. Balloon creations are more than just a passing fancy for the Burgingers; for details, visit their web site at http://www.balloonnet.com.
