Uncle Sam--Salesman

Because Troy is the home of Uncle Sam, businesses in Troy find ways to work Sam into their signs and store-fronts. For example, the health food store on Fourth Street sports a sign with a happy-looking Sam. YO!
'Yo! Organic Foods Here!'

Much of the Uncle Sam imagery is tongue-in-cheek, such as the flyer for the Uncle Sam Lanes bowling alley (motto: "I Want You Bowling!") Meanwhile, the menu for Casey's East restaurant features a caricature of owner Jim Casey in Uncle Sam garb, hawking his trademark entrees...

Sam eating a subUncle Sam caricatures seem to be especially silly when they appear on take-out menus. The picture at the right, from a pizza/sub shop menu, shows a particularly giddy Uncle Sam. Presumably, he's enjoying the Uncle Sam special ("a real mixed up thing... sorta like the country!")

The Troy Pub & Brewery is another local eatery where Uncle Sam bric-a-brac features prominently in the decor. The main attraction at the TP&B is the assortment of fine beers, brewed on the premises. Accordingly, the restaurant's coasters show Sam enjoying a cold one.

Personally, I'm partial to their amber ale -- which, as it happens, is called "Uncle Sam Amber."

Uncle Sam has even helped to sell soda pop. When these fifty 7Up cans are stacked in a pyramid, they form a portrait of Uncle Sam. The makers of 7Up issued the series of cans in 1976, as a special promotion to commemorate America's Bicentennial.

The can at the top says "United We Stand, 1776-1976." The can at the lower left gives instructions on how to place the cans in the proper order.
