Sam's hat is an instantly recognizable symbol that brings to mind the U.S. government. Add the hat to an otherwise unremarkable portrait, and you have the makings of a political cartoon. For example, the Weekly Standard showed Hillary Clinton wearing Sam's trademark hat, as the cover artwork for a story on "The Feminization of America." Such "feminized" images are nothing new. The 1970's saw increased awareness of women's equality issues, and with that awareness came ERA posters showing women dressed like Uncle Sam. Even Mad magazine published a mini-poster of a woman in Sam's clothes, with the caption, "I Want, Too." |
