Download and Installation

  1. Download and install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), if not already on your computer. Java 1.6 is recommended, but it will work under 1.4.
  2. Download either:
  3. Unpack the distribution. This distribution includes the FTJava client software, some sample game files, this documentation, ship files, scenario files, and image files.
  4. Execute the FTJava client by running the RunFTJava.bat file.
  5. FTJava is configured to either run as a standalone program, reading game files, and writing order files, or as an e-mail client, retreiving and sending files from the server. A .FTJavaPrefs file is written in your HOME directory. Entries to this file can be made under the FTJava File menu under Preferences. This includes your mail address, your mail provider, your outgoing provider, and other information. You may choose to enter your email name and password in this preference area if you choose to do so. If not, the software will ask you for your id and password when you fetch mail from your mailbox.
  6. FTJava will also establish directories for incoming and outgoing files.
  7. The 'Delete emails' option will only delete mail messages that the client recognizes as FTJava game files. It will not have any other impact on your mailbox.
  8. All incoming game files should be placed in the 'IncomingGames' directory.
