The symbols for the four Evangelists-- the winged man, the eagle,
the winged lion and the winged ox--are derived from Ezekiel's vision of
four living creatures, although Ezekiel's description is most
likely of cherubim.
Ezekiel 1:10
Upper Left
The winged man is a symbol of Matthew because he began his gospel with a genealogy of Jesus.
Upper Right
The eagle is a symbol of John because of his "soaring" witness to Jesus' divine nature.
Lower Left
The winged lion is a symbol of Mark because of his clear proclamation of Jesus' Resurrection.
Lower Right
The winged ox is a symbol of Luke because of his emphasis on Jesus' sacrificial atonement.
