A. Possible Course Sequences for French

Grade 8 9 10 11 12

1* 1x 2R/NR 3R/NR 4 5

1* This sequence is for students who have taken French prior to 8th grade.

2* This sequence is generally for students who have not taken French prior to 9th grade.

Other important information:

  • French 1X counts as a high school credit course if the student passes the course and the New York State French Proficiency exam at the end of the year.
  • French 1R is a high school credit course.
  • All students who successfully complete French 3 may opt to take the French Regents Exam.
  • French 5 is a college credit course.

C. Homework

  • Homework is due the next day unless otherwise announced.
  • Homework is given regularly, almost every night of the week. If no specific assignment is given, students should spend 10-15 minutes reviewing vocabulary.
  • Usually homework is gone over in class. It is the student's responsibility to make any corrections necessary and to ask questions if he/she did not understand the material.

D. Grading

All test, quiz, written assignment and oral presentation grades are recorded as fractions. At the end of each quarter, the fractions are added up and the total bottom number is divided into the total top number to find the average. Then, points will be added or subtracted to the quarterly average based on the "materials check".

Materials check:All materials in part B are checked daily. If a student is missing any one of the 5 things, he/she is marked "u" (unprepared) for that day. One point will be subtracted from the quarterly average for every 3 "u's" received per quarter. If a student has received no "u's", 3 points will be added on to that quarter's average.

E. Absences/Missed Work

If a student is absent from class, it is his/her responsibility to check the "Homework/Classwork" board in the back of the classroom and to copy down what was missed. (The students have been given 4 blank copies of the same form posted in the classroom to facilitate this process.) Students must then see me to get any worksheets handed out or to set up a time to make up any tests or other graded work given. It is the students responsibility to complete any other work by the next day. Graded work, tests, etc. not made up within 5 days will become a zero. Homework is due the next day.

If there are extenuating circumstances where this is not possible, I must receive written notification from a parent/guardian within the 5 days explaining the reason. (Sports events/practices will not be accepted as an excuse for not making up a test/quiz within the 5 days.)

Important: If a student is in school, but misses class for any reason, it is his/her responsibility to get the notes and assignments missed, and to be prepared the next day.

F. Classroom Expectations

To ensure success in learning French, students are expected to observe the following:

  1. Arrival to class on time.
  2. Appropriate and courteous behavior.
  3. No requests to leave class to go to lockers for materials, etc.
  4. No gum, candy, or food of any kind in class.

G. After-School Help

I am available Tuesdays and Thursdays for extra help, make-ups and detentions (unless otherwise announced). I will also stay on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for extra help and make-ups if arrangements are made ahead of time.

Students are encouraged to seek extra help if they are having difficulty understanding the material.

H. Interim Progress Reports

At 5 week intervals, between when report cards are issued, students will be informed of their 5-week average and how many "unprepareds" they have in French class. They are expected to inform their parents of this. Parents/Guardians should receive a report of their child's progress every 5 weeks in either the form of a report card or an interim progress report.

Please feel free to call me at school (587-6690) if you have any questions concerning your child's progress. If you call, please indicate an option of times when you can be reached.
