NewsGreetings from Saratoga Springs, New York, which occupies a portion of the Mohawk Nation Territory. I am a descendant and I chose to experience and savor what I can of our homeland. Firstly, I must tell you that indeed "Healing Waters" do exist in Saratoga. I arrived with many aches and pains, both spiritually and physically, but I am happy to announce that I can now walk without my cane and my mind is free to enjoy the sense of belonging that comes from spending time within the territory of our forbears. The area surrounding Saratoga is rich in history, as all history buffs know. Previous to the onslaught of the Revolution, it has been our home and a haven for many other Native tribes seeking refuge from the oppressors as the greedy hands reached out to take whatever it was that Native People had in this beautiful country known to us as Turtle Island. It is indeed a privilege to reflect upon the past and to appreciate what remains in the Mohawk Valley and the area surrounding Saratoga. And although it will never be more than a personal fantasy, I dream that my people can someday return to our homeland, but it will always be a dream within me. In exploring the area around Saratoga Springs I find very little remnants of my group that could say we once lived and thrived here. But miracles happen and in our ever-changing world maybe a welcome sign will one day be erected "Welcome Home Haudenasaunee." This first newsletter will be very brief indeed as I am busy completing my website and I must not forget to remind my visitors to see the coming July-August issue of Native Peoples Arts & Lifeways Magazine which will feature an article about my Moccasins. Come back soon and I will tell you more about my observations of Saratoga and the surrounding areas. Onen kukniwah - June 1st 2007 |
