Artist’s Statement

Despite a sidetrack into a mathematics degree in college and several years in a biochemistry lab, my lifelong interest has been in fiber and fabric. From early years, when my mother taught me to sew, this interest led to the many hours in college spent in the costume department, to an interest in needlework sparked by a gift of a crewel kit from my mother, to making traditional quilts in the 1970’s and finally (but maybe not lastly) to designing and stitching of art quilts and wearable art. While I have no formal training in the art field, I have studied with many nationally known needlework and quilting teachers through my membership in the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and our local quilt group. The creative urge to explore new techniques, to use my own designs in needlework and quilting, to be always saying “what if....” has led me in many different directions on my route to becoming a fiber artist. The use of the quilt as an art form attracts me because of the interplay of pattern from different fabrics, the texture that can be created by manipulating fabric and the secondary patterns that the quilting line or surface embellishments add to the main pattern of the fabric. In my work, I aim for a strong graphic design that is stimulating from a distance and then draws the viewer closer to explore details in the fabrics and stitching.
