Survey Results: Supportive Statements

Here are the results from the 1-2-3 Response to Global Warming Campaign conducted by the 1st Unitarian Church in Portland, Oregon in response to the Evaluation Survey

How did the members of your faith community react to the program?

  1. It’s a great way to motivate people to accomplish specific, concrete tasks of change. Would be great to motivate people to move to the next step – political, organizational change.
  2. My family and I are careful about these things anyway, but this program has increased our mindfulness and being part of a movement felt good.
  3. The pledge form was a great incentive. Signing my name made me think about it more often.
  4. I really appreciated the attention to the issue and the reminders. We need to keep this up all year long. Specific reminders of things to do every season. This makes us feel good. Thanks again.
  5. Loved it! Appreciate the channel for action.
  6. Thanks for getting this going!
  7. It was good to have attention brought to the actual mechanics of energy consumption. I often found myself reigning my car in as I wheeled around the Terwilliger Curves, remembering my pledge and also considering my mortality.
  8. The action of our church exerts a laudable peer pressure.
  9. Excellent approach in identifying practical ways individuals by small incremental actions can make a significant difference as a group.
  10. Great program – very specific, concrete things to get your hands on.
  11. I like being part of the solution rather than part of the problem, although I’m still part of the problem.
  12. We have cut our electricity consumption by 22%. A big piece of that is a child off to college, but our new Energy Star refrigerator and the new bulbs account for about 8-10% of the reduction. Thank you for doing this!
  13. The examples of how much pollution could be cut by small actions was inspirational and made committing to pledge easier.
  14. This is a great idea – but needs constant reminding to people amidst all our business.
  15. We all can make a difference.
  16. It was easier than we thought it would be!
  17. I know we could do a lot more.
  18. As always, hearing the message repeatedly reinforced the call to action.
  19. I appreciated the push the program gave me to take some simple steps to address this problem. I liked knowing that this was a communal effort in addition to being an individual effort.
  20. I think this is a very important thing to do with the UU congregation. Thank you!
  21. I think it is great that you are doing an evaluation. I see the pledge as a process to change. Rev. Disrud helped me with that view when he spoke in service.
  22. It helped to have the information in the Bulletin. It helped to be updated and to be reminded of specific actions to take.
  23. Thanks for the trouble you went to to lay out samples of the long-term bulbs. I had meant to get some but never did until I saw your samples and read your literature.
  24. Good idea!
  25. We need to change our habits. This was a great wake-up call! Thank you!
  26. Excellent job with this initiative. Keep up the good work.
  27. Thank you so much for doing this good work! Your light bulb demonstration was illuminating!
  28. This program is good to keep my attention focused on energy-consumption issues.
  29. Was glad to be part of a group action.
  30. It’s amazing how good I have become at turning out lights – and how many must have been left (needlessly) on! And how much an extra sweater helps keep the heat down.
  31. Easier to do than I expected.
  32. Keep doing this!
  33. This pledge is important, beyond the pledge action, to make us aware of our impact with energy usage and to be creative in conserving.
  34. I plan to undertake the light bulb part (the one part I didn’t commit to) as my light bulbs burn out.
  35. This was a great idea and organized well.
  36. The info was helpful and prompted us to do a few other things – so for us, an effective program! Thanks for your work on this!
  37. It’s easy to lose sight of these looming (though not obviously immediate) problems with a busy life. Thanks for the reminder.
  38. Went to see speaker at Portland State U. re: this subject. Opened my eyes to the political, social, financial implications – things I hadn’t heard or thought about. If everyone heard this, I am certain it would help the cause.
  39. Thank you to 1st Unitarian for helping me be more aware!
  40. The city of Portland must have heard about it. The twin towers were dark when last we drove I-5.
  41. Noticed 10% reduction in natural gas usage over same period last year, even when temperatures outside were lower.
  42. Good to be part of a community working on this. Gave us energy to do more.
  43. The reality of global warming has scared me into being more action-oriented.
  44. The difference for us is that we are becoming more conscious and appreciative of the “global impact” of practices we learned growing up in the Depression era.
  45. Great work – important education and manageable actions.
