Console Wars '96 (
or "Why Sega should drop out of the race.")
|
|
Nintendo 64
|
|
Anyone who has owned a Nintendo system in the past knows that Nintendo
means Quality. Even Nintendo's 8-bit system was better than Sega's
Genesis. Hardware-wise, maybe not, but the games were more fun.
Then Nintendo released it's 16-bit Super Nintendo with Super Mario
World, Pilotwings and F-Zero. Right away Sega was ready to put it
in peoples' faces that their 16-bit system has over 60 games compared
to Nintendo's 3. Of course you have more games, Sega, you came out
a year earlier. The SNES had just come out! But, Sega forgot one
golden rule: It's Quality, Not Quantity. Sega can release
a ton of crappy games, but if they suck, it's not gonna be better
that Nintendo's SNES. And that's what happened. Sega's games sucked.
Nintendo soon released more and more games and became number 1.
Now, Nintendo released
the N64 (a year after Sega's Saturn.) And again, history repeats
itself. A Mario game, a pilotwings game, and a racing Game. Yet
people still say that the Saturn is better because of more games.
Read your history people! Nintendo WILL catch up again. Give
it time.
Another thing people
complain about is Nintendo's old (that's right OLD) approach
towards video-game violence. They compare Nintendo to Disney just
because they made Acclaim remove the blood from Mortal Kombat. So
what? That was a long time ago. Nintendo has changed their ways
now. They allow violence. Look at Mortal Kombat Trilogy, MK2, MK3,
the and Killer Instinct series (thier OWN game.) All these games
featured blood and violence. The squeaky-clean days of Nintendo
are OVER!
And once again,
Nintendo made the right move to go with cartridges instead of CDs.
Unlike CDs, you don't have to wait for a game to load up. Sure,
load time is nice if you want to get a drink, make something to
eat, or watch that episode of 60 minutes you taped (and all that
BEFORE the title screen) but if you actually turned the machine
on to play the game, load time SUCKS! And, unlike CDs, you
can't accidently scratch a cartridge rendering it useless. Parents
sure as Hell aren't gonna buy little Tommy that game if they know
it comes on a CD that can be broken if it falls. Oh, and don't say
"if I bought a game, I'd be careful with it" because there are a
whole lot of things that could happen. Earthquakes can shake it
off the table (you people in CA know what I'm talking about,) Your
sibling could try to play it while you're not home and drop it.
Or you just might trip while carrying it. And don't give me any
crap about the price. If the N64 games are higher that CDs it's
because the manufacturers know they can get more for it because
it's better.

Sony Playstation
|
|
Anyone who has owned a Sony
product knows that Sony means Quality. So, why not get in the gaming
business? Sony managed to put out a great system. Albeit, the games
are CD based, but there is one word that says "Forget about the
CDs." The word says "Buy this system because if you don't, you WILL
lose out." I will now utter this beautiful word to you: Squaresoft.
Yes, the ultimate
videogame company is producing games for this system. Final Fantasy
7 will be released for the Playstation. In fact, if you buy the
FF7 demo right now, you get a free copy of the Squaresoft game:
Tobal No.1! Squaresoft is one of those companies that brings a little
bit of holiness to any machine (well, almost, I'm afraid they wouldn't
be able to help the Saturn.)
The Playstation
has many things going for it. Hardware-wise, Sony has made the Playstation
capable of many really cool features. Remember Nintendo's "Mode
7" effects? Sony has put in things that make Mode 7 look like tofu.
They are things that have to be seen to understand.
I wish I could
give more information about the Playstation, but people tend to
notice the bad things about something the most, and since there's
not much bad stuff about the Playstation, this section is short.
Let's just say Nintendo is King and Playstation is prince. Now it's
time for the court jester...

Sega Saturn
|
|
If the above paragraph is
true, this section should be the longest. But, I'm not gonna waste
your time so I'll make it brief. Sega cannot possibly win the battle.
I can't tell you what the name Sega means, but it doesn't mean quality
and it doesn't mean replay value. First of all, Sega chose CD. This
is bad. Second, their games suck. They are just not fun.
Sega is more interested
in beating their opponents than anything. First, their Master System
was defeated by the NES. So they released the Genesis. But that
was defeated by the SNES. Thinking that CDs were the way to go (obviously
looking at the Turboduo as having an advantage) they created the
Sega-CD. This died fast. They had to take the next step up, the
32X peripheral. This was still defeated by the SNES. Finally they
created the Saturn. Sega has always been trying to copy NOA. Do
you remember the Super Scope 6? The SS6 was a Nintendo Light Gun.
Sega immediately copied it. Not a month or two later, Sega released
the Menacer with SIX games!
Another thing Sega
doesn't think about is thier hardware. They create really cheap
systems just to get it out faster. Look at the Genesis. 80 sprites
on screen at once. What?!
The point being,
is that the games are supposed to be fun. And unfortunately, Sega
doesn't understand that. Rumour has it that they will be dropping
out of the videogame market soon. I believe that it's a rumour.
But i also believe that it's true.

Others

Personally, I believe that
these three are the only systems in the running. The M2 is vaporware,
the Neo•Geo is too expensive for the home-user, and the 3DO is going
Bye-bye.
