NOTES: When Mary (Benedict) BENNETT heard that the British
were coming up Compo Street on their way to burn Danbury in the Revolutionary
War, she ran to gather her set of pewter and buried it beneath a brook
that flowed through her yard. She forgot a tankard, which was taken
by the British as they passed through. It was carried to Cross Highway,
where, either by accident or intentionally, they left it, and having her
initials on the handle, was restored to her.
