Notes:  He was one of the original grantees of East Hampton, and was among the first in the family to come to America.   He owned land in the parishes of Tunbridge and Ashford, near Maidstone. In 1635 John, his wife Alice, eldest son John, and his father came to America; going first to Lynn, MA then to Southampton in Mar. 1644. In the spring of 1649 he was in East Hampton. The father returned to England to obtain his property and was murdered on the high seas of his return to America.

Notes:  He was named in the Indian deed for East Hampton in 1660.  He first married Sarah Stratton about 1660.  She died by 1684, and he then married (probably) his 1st wife's sister, Rebecca Stratton Bushnell.  He was Constable 1674 and 1680.  In 1683, he was chosen one of the committee to join Southampton in selecting a representative for the First Colonial Assembly under Governor Dongan.

Notes:   He left East Hampton, L.I. for Connecticut in Sept. 1776. After the Revolution, he removed to Athens, Greene County, NY and carried on a trade between there and Cuba.  During one of these trips he died in Cuba.  Being a Protestant, burial was not allowed on the island of Cuba, (so the story has come down in the family) but on account of his popularity, burial was allowed on the shore between the low and high water marks.

Notes:  Ezra Hand was born in 1799 in Rensselaerville, NY, a short distance southwest of Albany. It is not known exactly when Ezra moved to Honesdale, PA, but was probably around 1830.  A man named Jason Torrey who must have had an ear to the ground, bought a large tract of swamp and deep forest at the site of Honesdale-to-be and built the first house there in 1826, according to a reprint of a local history written in the 1850's when memories were fresh.  In any case, the move probably came a year or so after Ezra's marriage to Catherine Chapman of Durham, Greene County, one of those little towns that has since died out.
