Notes: James enlisted under General Washington and served throughout
the Revolutionary War. He was taken prisoner while under the command
of Colonel Morgan as their forces tried to defend Fort Washington on the
Hudson above New York.
It is a well authenticated fact that
James, then Lieutenant McFarlane, having a knowledge of blacksmithing,
sought and obtained employment from the smithies of the British army.
Then every Saturday night, he divided his profits obtained from the enemy
amongst the poorest of the captives. This fact was related by his
fellow prisoners.
