Notes:  Daniel Niven came to New York City from the Island of Ila, northwest part of Scotland, in 1770 at the age of 28 years.  "He was patriotic in all his ideas and a true lover of freedom.  Early in the war, with other patriots, he volunteered his services to his adopted country and was actively engaged in various duties in New York City and New Jersey.  Becoming acquainted with Washington, who soon saw the true and determined character of the young and active Scotchman, he received a commission of Lieutenant of Engineers and was much employed at West Point and other places along the River (Hudson).  He was instrumental in drawing, with others, the plans for Fort Putnam, supervising the floating of the great chain across the River and was at the Point at the time of Arnold’s treasonable attempt to surrender that Fort. " He went from one point of service to another till at the close of the war, he had rank of Major and was one of the 15 men on George Washington’s Staff.  He was one of the officers who helped to found the Society of the Cincinnati when war was ended.
