Notes:  Came to America with wife and daughter in the Winthrop Fleet of 1630. He settled in Roxbury, Norfolk Co., MA.  It is believed that they actually arrived on the flagship of the fleet, the "Arabella", in the company of Governor Winthrop and other dignitaries.  One of the founders of the Mass. Bay Colony.  Assist. in Charter of Charles I - served in England 1628-29.  Assist. in Mass. Bay Colony 1630,1636, 1642, 1650.  Treasurer of Colony 1632-34.
       William was the founder of Springfield, MA and one of the Bay Colony’s leaders until the publication of a book about justification and redemption.  He returned to England to enjoy greater religious freedom and died at Wraysbury, England on 10 Oct 1662.

Notes:  CONNECTICUT'S rudimentary government, providing for rule by eight men, lasted only about one year. This group, called "the magistrates," consisted of Roger Ludlow, William Phelps, William Pynchon, Henry Smith, John Steel, William Swaine, Andrew Ward, and William Westwood.
