Notes:  Mr. Staples has been in business in Westport since 1827, when he began to deal in “everything to make a house - lumber, lime, nails, paint, etc.”, continuing until 1863 when the store was burned.  He rebuilt, rented it, but was obliged to take active charge at the end of the year.  His son, William C. has had charge of the store for the last 8 years.  Since January 1, 1864, Mr. Staples has been at the head of the First National Bank of Westport, and is a director of the Westport & Saugatuck horse railroad.
His chief pride is of course, the Staples High School.  Besides the large sum which represents the first cost of the building, he pays about $1200 a year for maintaining the school, besides incidental expenses of from $100-$300 more.  There is no established fund, but at his death, the school will have “something.”[The NEWTOWN BEE/Vol. XII, no. 5, Friday, Feb. 8, 1889]

Notes:      "At the age of 18, my grandfather (William C. Staples) ran away to sea.  At least he thought he did.  His father heard about this and without telling his son, paid the Captain $200 to teach his son navigation.  My grandfather always wondered why he was treated better than the other members of the crew and why the Captain took such an interest in him.  He never found out until he returned home.  His first trip took him to China."
"Some years later, his father, Horace Staples, purchased the Brig "Mary Staples" to engage in coastal trade in South America.  His son, William C. Staples, was Master of the Brig.  In November 1861, my grandfather was commissioned "Acting Master" in the United States Navy.  (I believe that "Acting Master" today would be similar to a Chief Navigating Officer).  He remained with the Navy during the Civil War and was discharged in November 1865. [Written by Horace W. Staples]
