Black and White and Apathy

Idealism isn't fashionable these days
Long ago and dead they say
Good riddance to be rid of hippie ways
Hail cynicism, irony and apathy

Everything is black and white
No questions asked, none answered
Everything and everyone
Is good, evil, or nothing at all
No in-between, no gray
Forced into simple categories
That fit nothing at all

Either its easy or ignored
True debate isn't fun anymore
Saving the world is just too hard
Why give our money to the poor?
They'll just throw it all away

Tragedies come and pass
So few say a thing
Empathy never lasts
Moral aphasia strikes again

Everything is black and white
No questions asked, none answered
Everything and everyone
Is good, evil, or nothing at all
No in-between, no gray
Forced into simple categories
That fit nothing at all

Playing war, each person must do his part
Protests and soldiers using violence and force
Routine kills souls, claimed Sarte
We serve routine as a matter of course

How can you all be so certain?
There is no in-between
There is no in-between
Just black, white and apathy

Author's Notes (aka references):
Aphasia: the inability (or also in this case, unwillingness) to talk; I took the term from one of my readings for natural resources because I particularly liked it
Sarte: Jean-Paul Sarte, famous existentialist philosopher known for the play No Exit, among many other works
