Mythical Creature
You always fancied yourself a griffin
But you turned out to be a phoenix
Burning slowly, smoldering inside
Letting the fear and hate
Catch fire
I calmly watched
Seeing the dancing orange flames
Helpless to put them out
I pretended nothing was wrong
"It will burn out"
Famous last words
I saw the result
The charred remains
It was always too late to stop you
It was your choice
All's left were the ashes
And my lamentations
Could not keep them
From blowing through my fingers
What had been is gone
And you emerged
A new creature
One without the warmth
The occasional kindness
That shown through the dark
With the bitterness, anger, and hate of before
And no light to contrast
One who does not love me anymore
And acted as if she never did
But I shall remember who did exist
And I will recall her with love
The girl who was so beautiful
And so unusual
But you shed that persona
Burned it away in the flame
Hoping to make yourself like all the rest
Brown and gray to replace your spectrum of colors
Fearful of the reds and blues returning
For they would expose you
But I wish they would
I wish I could see who I knew before
Just to keep my faith in you
To know that some part has not been completely destroyed
But you've gotten your wish
You always wanted to be a mythical creature
