DOWNRIGHT MAD
The Upright Citizens Brigade (Matt
Besser, Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh,
and Ian Roberts) may be
the most anarchic comics to come out
of
the late Del Close's legendary
Chicago improv company, Second City.
In their brand of sketch
comedy, a theatre-of-the-absurd chaos
develops from seemingly unrelated
threads, which eventually come
together with surreal precision.
The debut episode of their second
season on Comedy Central, on
June 14th, sends up competitiveness:
parents enter their infants in
"baby fights," for instance, to
determine who has the best
kid. It begins with the troupe delivering
a human-cheeta hybrid that
at birth can run as fast as the
wind.
This week, the Brigade hosts
a tribute to Close at the U.C.B.
Theatre, where every weekend
they continue to perform their insanely
popular shows "Spaghetti Jesus"
and "A.S.S.S.S.C.A.T. 2000."
