Brie

General Description

A striking, if not particularly attractive, race the Brie have formed the nation known as the Principality of Vartillia in the far west, but their men are found throughout Whent in their traditional capacity as sailors par excellence.

Physical Characteristics

Build: Gaunt, almost to the point of being emaciated, the Brie rarely reach 180 lbs.

Coloring: Easily recognized throughout Whent the Brie have white to grey hair, green eyes, and an obvious grey pallor that sets them apart where ever they go.

Endurance: Poor

Height: Males average 6'2" with the women close behind at 6' even

Lifespan: 140-160

Resistance: Normal to poor

Special Abilities: None

Demeanor: Detached, superior, and uncaring

Prejudices: Generally those who are incapable of using magic or are tied to a particular place are viewed with disdain. Most everyone is treated as if they are barely worth the Brie's notice.

Professions: Any spell using. The Brie rarely pursue non-spell using professions with the exception of the Rogue-Mariner combination. Their lack of piety prevents most advancement in the area of Priestly magic.

Culture

Clothing & Decoration: Strangely copper is the metal most valued for personal decoration among the Brie, with many earrings and bracelets common among both sexes. Clothing is usually very well made wool, (Brie wool has the reputation of being as soft as silk), and quite functional. The Brie rarely wear cloaks, choosing instead woolen coats when necessary.

Fears & Inabilities: All Brie fear and lothe music in all of its forms. On their ships no music of any form is allowed and they go so far as to shoot any birds that might sing and throw passengers overboard if they refuse to cease any music. They have a strong belief that such music may attract the attention of evil spirits. On the few times they have been convinced to speak on the topic they seem absolutely certain that a great evil will befall them should they allow music. Harps, dancing and other musical topics are quite often present in Brie artwork - particularly in the ancient pieces that they claim to have brought from thier homeland. An odd set of circumstances that has drove more than one sage to distraction in the face of a Brie refusing to speak on the matter!

Lifestyle: This race forms the Principality of Vartillia and are the only racial group who, as a unit, worship the "Wandering God" although actual priests are nearly unknown. (The Romm do not ‘worship’ the wandering god as much as they respect him and believe him to be one of them.) While certainly of human origin, the Brie have odd mannerisms, white to grey hair, green eyes, and an obvious grey pallor that sets them apart where ever they go. Brie are quiet to the point that they often don’t even bother to acknowledge much less answer comments or questions put to them that they judge to be unworthy. Most other people find them rude in the extreme but the Brie generally don’t much care what others think. As a people they tend to allow each other to take whatever path they choose. They are also very focused and controlled on a personal level. Scholarship tends to be highly prized and the rapier and parrying dagger were first introduced to Whent by the Brie. They carry these weapons everywhere. Lastly they have a love of and a connection with wind and wave. They have a natural talent toward seamanship and enjoy storms in much the same way that others enjoy fine music. As to music, while to say that the Brie fear it may be going too far but they do have a very strong superstition against it to the point that they will not allow any music within their halls or on their ships – often on pain of death.

Very strongly matralinial all land and any product of the land may only be owned by the women of Brie. Husbands are considered part of their wives family and children are considered members of their mother's family. Although ships are fashioned of wood and other products of the land once they have completed a successful voyage of a week or more they are considered to have become a "product of the waves, wind and foam" and therefore the rightful property of men. Men may only own such produce of the sea and, once again, any product of the sea that has spent more than a week ashore becomes the rightful property of the woman who owns the land it is on. As much of the lives of these people are centered around ships the creation of a ship by a woman (the only ones who may do so since the wood and iron, etc. are owned by women) is a very powerful social event. Once built the male who captains the ship's first voyage (of more than a week) becomes the ships new owner and the choice of captain is thus very important. "Gifting" a man with such a valuable collection of resources is an event of the highest significance.

The highest title a man can attain is Captain of the Fleet although achieving even Captain is an accomplishment of note (and the title is only granted those who captain a BRIE ship). Women may aspire to the title of "Lady in Waiting" who is considered the senior advisor to the Queen. Any woman who owns real property is granted the title of Lady. For reasons they will not discuss the Brie have no actual queen and her seat remains present but vacent on all state occasions. Naturally given the rules of property there are no female Captains nor male Lords among the Brie.

The Brie introduced to Whent the rapier and main gauche as well as the paired weapons styles that make them even more effective. Both men and women are at least passing familiar with these weapons.

The Brie have a well deserved reputation as mariners and users of magic. Their ships are the envy of every other sailor on Whent. Nearly all of the Brie have knowledge of at least one Magical Art and the use of magic is obvious throughout their rocky city.

Marriage Pattern: Monogamous, although their lifestyle keeps the men away from home most often and infidelity is a tacitly accepted norm. The choice of partner is the woman's (since she is typically the one who owns property of her own) and extended courtship is the norm. Having children by men other than her husband both before and after marriage is common and accepted.

Religion: The Brie honor/worship the Wandering God - strangely since they are so obviously an alien race - but take an almost uncaring bearing toward other religions and gods.
