Jurri

General Description

The Jurri are a semi-nomadic people living primarily on the Jurri Plains. Known for their love of physical prowess the Jurri are some of the most talented athletes and warriors. Among the Jurri it is considered the epitome of warrior prowess to “count coup” on an enemy - that is to get close enough to touch your enemy with your weapon without injuring him and not being struck by the enemy. The Jurri ride horses, hunting the Auroch of the plain for much of their needs. A significant percentage of the Jurri have bonded with Thyfur, (an eagle-like bird they ride). The Jurri and the Teleri have, for some unknown reason, developed strong affection for each other. As a result nearly 10% of the Jurri are Half-Elven and the Teleri are common among the tribes.

Physical Characteristics

Build: Tall, thin, and wiry.

Coloring: The Jurri are a red skinned race, with long, thick black hair and predominantly brown eyes – although blue and gray eyed Jurri are occasionally encountered. The Jurri have no facial hair.

Endurance: Normal

Height: Six feet is normal for males, while females average 2” less.

Lifespan: 120 years

Demeanor: The Jurri always seem to have laughter in their eyes, and most who meet the Jurri assume the joke is at their expense. Never at rest the Jurri revel in the physical and love to instigate others into competition. Losing does not matter so much as putting on a good show.

Prejudices: The Jurri HATE orcs. No quarter is asked or given. Anything having to do with dragons or reptiles is repulsive to the Jurri. The physically inept are viewed with disdain.

Culture

Clothing & Decoration: Typical of the less civilized races the Jurri usually wear leathers and furs. Their bead-work is outstanding and is highly sought after. More typical cloth and silks are worn usually as adornment rather than as actual clothing. Body painting is an art among the Jurri.

Fears & Inabilities: All Jurri fear becoming crippled or otherwise unable to be active. The color white is also believed to be evil among these people. Others are listed below.

Lifestyle: The Jurri are a tribal people and devote their time to supporting the needs of the tribe and developing their physical prowess. Men and women are of equal status except when the woman is with child, during which time she is to be protected at all costs and not to risk her child. Warfare is their common pursuit although death and injury is less common that it might be due to their focus on “counting coup”. Warfare with the orcish tribes of the Mountains of the Sun and with the Monnit and Obucc is much more dangerous. (Personal combat with an orc to the death is a common rite establishing adulthood, although excellence in nearly any sport will also serve.)

Marriage Pattern: Marriage among the Jurri is a very open establishment. Men and women may take as many additional husbands and wives as they wish with the following limitations. All other husbands/wives must agree with the choice, the new spouse may not already be married, they must be able to support the new spouse if there was need. Extramarital affairs are common and largely accepted. Divorce is usually a matter simple public renunciation. The line is traced through the female.

Religion: The Jurri have their own pantheon of animal gods. The religion stresses self-achievement and individual accomplishment. Raven, the trickster god who always finds a way to win no matter what the situation, is their principle god.
